Bill Gross is an American businessman. Gross grew up in Encino, California and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

He has founded a lot of startups, and incubated many others — and he got curious about why some succeeded and others failed.

So he gathered data from hundreds of companies, his own and other people's, and ranked each company on five key factors.

He found one factor that stands out from the others — and surprised even him.

Gross serves on the boards of numerous companies. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology and of the Art Center College of Design.
