1)What is
Ellipsis ? How to use them ?
Ellipsis are
used when you are quoting and want to omit words.Eg: “This is the only time…”
If a full
stop would ordinarily follow the word omitted, you will the have three dots
followed by a full stop. Eg. “I am not interested….”
2)Co-operate,
Co-educate, Co-exist, - Are these hyphens or dashes ?
What is the
difference between hyphen and dash ?
A Hyphen is a
straight line shorter than a Dash (-). It is used to join upward or syllables.
It’s only function is to act as a link.
a)The hyphen is used when the word is too long to finish on
the line where it started. This, however, should not be done too often.
Eg. I had
told you not to disturb the class. Don’t you understand simple English ?
b)The Hyphen links pairs of words used as single words or
groups of words.
Eg:
Simple-minded; over-heated; home-work; under-nourished; father-in-law;
mother-in-law; sister-in-law; brother-in-law; commander-in-chief;
never-to-be-forgotten moment; Jack-of-all-trades; Jack- in-the-box etc.
c)The Hyphen
is used where a Vowel is followed by another Vowel, in order to keep the
pronunciation clear and separate.
Eg.
Co-operate, Co-educate, Co-exist etc.
The Dash is
longer than a hyphen. Its job is to break – off.
(a)
The
Dash is used to mark the begining and end of an interruption.
Eg. My son--- he will join us soon---would
like to meet you .
(b)
The
Dash is also used to state a thought that is repeated for effect or emphasis.
Eg
I marvel at his intelligence --- intelligence he should be proud of.
A TIME TO THINK
What an age
we are in .We have taller buildings but
shorts tempers. Wider freeways but narrower viewpoints We spend more but save
less. We buy more but enjoy less. We have bigger houses but smaller families,
More conveniences but less time: We have more degrees but less common sense
More
knowledge but less judgments More medicines but less well being.
We spend too
much, laugh too little driver too fast, get angry too quickly, stay up too lake
, get up too tired read too rarely, watch too much of TV and pray too
little. We have multiplied our
possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom and lie too
often. We have learned how to make a living but not a life, we have add ed
years to life, not life to years.
We have been all the way to the moon and back
but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbors, We have
conquers outer space but not inner space. We have done large thinks but better
things, we have spirit the atom but not better things. We write more but
accomplish less. Plan more but accomplish less.
We have
learnt to rush but not to wait, we have hinges income but lower morals, more
food but less appetite More acquaintances but fewer friends. We make more
computers told more in formations than
even before but have less communications We have become large on quality but short on
quality the we live in a time of words food and slow digestions tall men and
short character, sleep profits and shallow relationships.
We are in the time of
word peace and domestic warfare More desire and less fun : more varieties of
food but less nutrition These are the days if two incomes but more devices, of
fancies house but broken homes, These are days of quick trips, throwaway
morality and pills that do everything from cheer to silence.
THINK – are
we becoming modern or just characterless.

Some men are
born great; some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them
---

To gossip is
a fault; To libel is a crime; To slander is a sin.
Who brought
you here?
A chief guest
spoke for one hour and still he had the
desire to speak for some more time. To his surprise he found a person taking
out a pistol and loading bullets.
Anticipating some danger he looked at him and
said : “Please don’t shoot me. I will finish in a minute.”
The one with
the pistol said: “ Don’t worry. You can speak as long as you want. I will not
shoot you. I will shoot the person who brought you here”.
