Cleaning Hacks - Tips & Recommendations

You know what makes cleaning easier? A good hack — something that saves you time, money, or both. Everyone needs a helping hand at tidying once in a while, so we found 20 tips that will entirely change how you approach chores. Check them out!

Heads up

Say “see ya” to soap scum and mildew on your shower head by tying a plastic bag containing vinegar and water over the fixture every other week. Leave it on overnight, then rinse the head clean in the morning.

Grill master

When was the last time you cleaned your grill? If the answer is “you have to clean it?”, it’s time to get rid of built-up gunk with this trick. Warm the device to a mild temperature then turn it off. Lay a few damp paper towels on top. Close the lid; and let everything cool. After 15 minutes, the towels will have softened hard-to-remove food chunks so you can wipe them away.

DIY disinfectant

Instead of buying new dishcloths or sponges, sanitize the ones you already have! Throw either in the microwave. A few minutes at a high temperature will kill most of the bacteria that may be living on them.

Fully baked solution

If you have hard-to-clean stains in your sink or on the stainless steel surfaces of your fridge or stove, buff them out with little to no elbow grease. Simply put some baking soda on a wet cloth or sponge and get wiping.

Sparkly jewels

Toothpaste is great for keeping your pearly whites gleaming, and it can do the same for your jewels.

Static cling magic

Did you know dryer sheets repel dust? This makes them the perfect cleaning tool! Wipe them along surfaces you’d rather not tidy (like baseboards) to cut down on your overall chore time.

Dish duty

Your dishwasher is one of the dirtiest objects in your home because it never gets cleaned (even though it spends its days cleaning everything else in your kitchen). Instead of disinfecting the appliance one shelf at a time, run two cycles — one with vinegar and another with baking soda.

Crack cleaner

It can be hard to remove dust from grates or blinds. The solution? Put an old sock on your hand and use it to wipe down each slat individually. To disinfect, soak the sock in water and vinegar first.

Shard absorber

Bread isn’t just for lunch. If you break a glass, use the carb to collect loose shards; the pieces will stick to the doughy surface of the bread.

Pot saver

If you burned your favourite pot cooking Sunday-night dinner, there’s a quick and easy way to save it. Soak it in a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar, then scrub with baking soda. It’ll look as good as new!

Banish bad odours

Garbage disposals can get extra stinky because they’re hard to clean. For a quick fix, let the appliance do what it does best to a highly acidic fruit (think a lemon or a grapefruit). The acids will help disinfect, while the sweet scent will mask odours.

Dust bucket

Fan blades are often too high to get very dusty, but cleaning them is still a pain. To make the task super simple, wrap a pillowcase around each individual blade and wipe clean. Dust gets trapped in the bag instead of falling all over the floor.

Cleaner computer

Cleaning a computer with most store-bought chemicals is a big no-no. They’re usually too powerful for the device’s sensitive surfaces. Instead, pour a bit of vinegar on a microfibre cloth and gently wipe down the keys and other parts to disinfect without causing damage.

Goodbye grease

A simple solution for removing greasy handprints from your couch after the Super Bowl is to scrub the area with a mixture of salt and rubbing alcohol, let sit, then vacuum. The grease stain will soon be nothing but a memory.

Grime solution

Save time and money by scrubbing your bathtub with a slice of lemon or grapefruit. The astringent nature of the fruit will disinfect while loosening grime, and the scent will leave your bathroom smelling delicious.

Tarnish treater

No one has time to polish silverware. Instead, try soaking cutlery or utensils in a pan lined with tin foil and filled with equal parts baking soda and water. Simply let everything sit for 30 minutes before drying.

Crumb conundrum solved

While you may not regularly use a lint roller to clean your clothes, consider putting it to use as a crumb catcher! This tool quickly cleans dust and dirt from a variety of surfaces — hardwood, cloth, tile, and others!

Glitter grabber

Glitter is fun for kids, but it’s a parent’s worst nightmare when cleaning up. This is a job for Play-Doh. Glitter sticks to the toy’s gooey surface.

Throw in a towel

When you need a certain item of clothing right away, but find that it’s wet (either from washing or water spillage), put it in the dryer with a dry towel. The towel will soak up some of the item’s extra moisture and speed up drying time.

See ya makeup smudges

While you can wash makeup off your face with makeup remover, the same product can’t be used on fabric. So what’s a person to do when lipstick gets on the couch? Dab the area with an acetone-based nail polish remover, then wipe down with detergent. Once dry, the stain should disappear.
