Understanding the causes, symptoms and treatment of Malaria

One of the most life-threatening diseases that spread through an infected mosquito bite is Malaria. In Malaria, mosquitoes transfer parasites into that person's bloodstream. As per reports, mosquitoes that spread Malaria are bred in stagnant water and rainwater pools.

Every year, several people lose their lives due to Malaria. This year, the theme for World Mosquito Day 2021 was also kept as 'Reaching the zero malaria target'.

Symptoms of Malaria:

There are five types of malaria parasites that can infect humans. Even a mosquito gets infected by biting someone who has malaria. Some of the major symptoms of Malaria include fever and shaking chills. Let's have a look at the signs and symptoms of Malaria:

- Fever and sweating.

- Chills that shake the whole body.

- Headache and muscle aches.

- Fatigue and chest pain, breathing problems and coughing.

- Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.

Diagnosis of Malaria:

Malaria is diagnosed through a blood test. The blood test will indicate whether or not you have malaria and will also identify the type of parasite that's causing your symptoms.

Treatment for Malaria:

Once a person gets diagnosed with Malaria, he/she should start the medication immediately. The doctor will provide drugs to kill the malaria parasite. The types of medication and the dosage depend on which parasite is causing the symptoms.

As per reports, some of the antimalarial drugs include Artemisinin drugs, Atovaquone, Mefloquine and a few other medicines. These medicines have some side effects that include gastrointestinal (GI) issues such as nausea and diarrhoea, headaches, and increased sensitivity to sunlight.

Other side effects such as insomnia and disturbing dreams, psychological disorders and vision problems and seizures are also found in patients.
