Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. Instead of being straight, the spine curves to the left or right in an S or C shape. This curvature can occur anywhere along the spine, but it's most common in the thoracic (mid) and lumbar (lower) back.
Causes:
- Idiopathic: Most cases of scoliosis have no known cause and are called idiopathic.
- Congenital: Some children are born with scoliosis due to abnormalities in the vertebrae.
- Neuromuscular: Certain conditions like cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida can lead to scoliosis.
Symptoms:
- Visible curve in the back
- Uneven shoulders
- One shoulder blade sticking out more than the other
- Ribs sticking out on one side more than the other
- Uneven hips or waistline
- Back pain (in severe cases)
Treatment:
- Observation: Mild cases may not require treatment and can be monitored over time.
- Braces: Moderate cases may be treated with braces to help prevent the curve from worsening.
- Surgery: Severe cases may require surgery to straighten the spine.
If you suspect you or someone you know has scoliosis, it's important to see a doctor for a diagnosis and to discuss treatment options.
